The Bolton Hotel was named after the ship, Bolton, one of the first immigrant ships to arrive in New Zealand in the 1800s.
Legend has it that one of the passengers, a young woman called Sophia Harris, brought a cutting of her favourite rose, which she carefully nurtured by planting it in a potato. It’s this extra care that sets the Bolton Hotel apart as a truly independent hotel dedicated to exceptional service. Our independent spirit is uniquely Wellington and part of the very fabric of our city’s history and culture. That’s why we were proud to be the home of Women's Refuge and the Propeller Studios Kate Sheppard Statue for over a year before she went to her permanent home at the National Library.

175 years ago The Bolton Ship arrived on Wellington’s shores carrying keen gardener Sophia Harris, with a piece of her homeland a rose, which survived the perilous journey in a potato. The Bolton Hotel has been segment of Wellington since 2005 but our connection to the city goes much further back than that. The Bolton Hotel is embracing new technology by installing iPad minis in all guest rooms equipped with a custom built Bolton Hotel App. Our beautiful one bedroom suite offers an apartment style room, with a king or queen bed and en suite with divide bath and shower. After learning more about Sophia Harris and the Bolton Ship I was sure that we name the hotel after the street it is located on in the spirit of independence that is the hallmark of everything Bolton Warwick said.
