In New Zealand fibrous plaster was said to have commenced with the arrival of Robert Wardrop in Dunedin from Victoria about the year 1900. In 1903, he was joined by an Austrian named Ernest Schaefer and began The Carrara Ceiling Company. During the early years artists, modellers and craftsmen were imported from England and Australia and the reputation for excellence which is still part of the Carrara name was built
Established in 1903, Carrara Ceilings has been synonymous with beautiful handcrafted plaster ceilings and cornices. We also manufacture Flat, Ice Flow and Arctic sheets to size and reproduce many of the ornamental tin ceilings.
Our ceiling center range includes a vast selection from the more customary styles thought to the magnificent Art Dec designs of the 1930’s. Carrara not only produces ceilings and cornices, we also manufacture ceiling domes, ceiling roses, battens, corbels, fireplaces, columns and decorative pieces. Curved walls and ceilings, any radius, are easily produced to your specifications. For over 100 years Carrara has continued to use the same method of manufacturing to make their plaster products.
We have over 350 molds for cornices, making us one of the largest purveyors of plaster products in the country. Carrara is synonymous with pretty handcrafted ceilings dating back to the early 1900’s, seen in homes throughout Fresh Zealand. Fibrous plaster columns can be produced in diverse shapes and sizes, for residential or commercial use. Our cornice selection is extensive, ranging from traditional designs hasty 1900’s through art nouveau and art deck, to the more colonial styles seen in houses today
