What you should know about Greenacres School

Elementary Schools in Wellington

I am passionate about the education of our children, and the community that we are in. Our family loves it at Greenacres, and I'm honoured to be part of such an amazing team on the Board. I have been a board member for 6 years and have thoroughly enjoyed my involvement with this wonderful little school. My job involves being the Head of Engineering and Computer Science at Victoria University. Having lived in Tawa for 34 years I know and understand what a fantastic place it is to raise a family.
It is an honour to have been elected to the Board of Trustees and I look forward to making the school the best it can be for our Community. A business owner in the broadcast electronics field, I supply, support and train film and television production houses and broadcasters. I am grateful of the opportunity to continue to be a member of our Board of Trustees. I am very proud to be the Principal of such a positive, caring and exciting place for students to learn and grow.
Our staff are a highly committed, hardworking and professional group who provide an engaging curriculum based on our school vision to encourage, challenge, inspire and learn!’. At Greenacres School we work in partnership with our community to provide the best possible learning and teaching environments for our students. We encourage all our students to become creative, independent and collaborative learners. We also focus on providing an inclusive environment where all students’ needs are being met socially, emotionally, culturally and academically.
Our Encourage Tree’ underpins our focus on a positive school culture and promotes a range of values that guide how we learn and behave at Greenacres. Greenacres School is a community based school set in picturesque grounds with plenty of room for our students to grow. Together we encourage, challenge and inspire while fostering a love of learning. Many of our students live within easy walking distance of the school, with the majority living in the Greenacres or local area.
We have extensive grounds including a modern adventure playground, a school field and a variety of grass and court areas where children can play. With significant planting, trees and grass areas the school has a predominately country feel that promotes a welcoming environment for our students, whanau and community. These buildings have all been painted in recent years with a new vibrant colour scheme that reflects our future focused approach new signage also provides a welcoming introduction to our school. Each name represents a stage of growth in the learning journey a student will experience while at Greenacres School.

Our Before School Care Programme offers opportunities for children to choose between a range of art and craft activities, games, Lego, books and free play equipment. Together we encourage, challenge and inspire while fostering a love of learning. At Greenacres, students are given the opportunity to pursue success through many sporting opportunities. Our Y5 6 student council give Greenacres School a strong student voice and a chance to build leadership skills. Greenacres students are offered a daily fitness progamme and wide range of physical education and sporting activities throughout the year including football skills, tennis, gymnastics, cricket and swimming. Our students regularly represent Greenacres at the Wellington and Regional level. Our Saturday sports teams are a regular feature in hockey Year 3 to 6 and netball Year 5 and 6 . Greenacres School has operated a peer mediation system for well over a decade. Our peer mediators contribute positively to promoting our inclusive and supportive playground environment. Each year a student council is elected to provide leadership and a student voice across the school. A new component of our curriculum is the introduction of Inspiration Friday. This programme provides opportunities for choice and creativity beyond the traditional curriculum. It is also a vehicle for building partnerships with community members, who are encouraged to share their skills with us. Students are offered the opportunity to take part in inspirational, small group learning activities of their choice. Students have access to computers throughout the day to supplement and extend their learning. Each term we have whole school assemblies that parents are welcome to attend. We share music performances, join in school singing and often get to watch a slideshow showing what each class has been doing. This provides an opportunity for our students to share their talents in the visual arts, music, drama and dance. Extension music sessions are also provided with a school choir and music group for children showing a real aptitude for music. The houses meet each term to foster a feeling of house spirit and allow the students of all ages to mix with one another. During these meetings, the students build up a positive relationship with key staff members assigned to their house, and the staff in turn provide pastoral care for the students. Together we encourage, challenge and inspire while fostering a love of learning
