Herriot Melhuish O’Neill Architects is an NZ IA award-winning practice with studios in Wellington, Christchurch and Auckland. The practice belongs to a supportive, insignificant practice group that includes Wellington architects Architecture, pennant Brown Architects, Parsons on Architects, John Mills Architects and Bean lessor Architects. Two of the boxes are dark stained cedar, perfectly positioned to maximize views and shelter, and to create a sheltered courtyard. On the waterfront in the Auckland suburb of Devon port, we worked in association with Opus International Consultants to relocate the Navy Museum into the heritage Minelaying Buildings at Torpedo Bay. A combination of clear sealed heavy sheet, rubber flooring, and natural timber creates a simple and serviceable backdrop to the busy interior activity.
The office space is free and open with no obvious hierarchies, the corners being filled by retreat spaces for meetings and a service hub on each floor, NZ IA Awards Jury, 2015. The Silverscreen building links offices, staff facilities and project spaces around a lustrous central atrium. Prior to HMO, in 1996 dual worked in architectural practices in London on a range of important scale urban regeneration projects, commercial developments and quality roof top housing developments. John Melhuish, NZ Registered Architect, FNZIA, manages the Wellington studio with Max Herriot.
