Mark Beehre initially trained as a specialist physician, working for several years in medical practice before studying photography at the Elam School of Fine Arts in Auckland and Massey University in Wellington. Mark is experienced in working across a range of photographic genres and has particular expertise in environmental portraiture, photographing people at ease in their own homes or other settings that are meaningful to them. Mark is the co proprietor of Courtenay Studios , offering a broad range of photographic services. As well as working on a number of projects for exhibition and publication, he is available for a variety of commissioned work.
Mark is the author of Men Alone Men Together , a significant work combining oral history and photographic portraiture in documenting the lives of some 45 gay men and recounting how their journeys have, for the moment, led them towards or away from relationship with another. My subjects are of various ages and from diverse walks of life my protection was not necessarily to seize the body beautiful, but to create a space where these men could stand naked earlier the camera, allowing themselves to be seen for who they are. This brick neoclassical church was opened in 1927 and by the final of the 20th century was one of a handful of buildings of any age or architectural value in Below Hunt. A meaningful documentary project combining photographic portraits and oral history in recording the life experiences of some 30 gay men and couples. Men Alone Men Together is a major project combining photography and oral history in documenting the lives of 45 gay men 14 couples, 14 single men and one trio and recounting how their lives’ journeys have, for the moment, led them towards or away from relationship with another. He was well into his eighties by then, and although his smile was still energetic his health was first to fail. After he died the subsequent year I visited the house several times, photographing it as it was when he had lived there and then recording the gradual clearing away of his possessions.
We spent a couple of weeks exploring the provinces of Malta And Jujoy in the northwest of the country, and from there ascended to the Altiplano or high plateau that forms the bottom of the Andes, rising to altitudes of over 400 meres. His published labor sits at the intersection of documentary, portraiture, and social history, and centers around themes of identity, sexuality and the lifelong quest for intimacy.
