Parsonson Architects was established in 1987 and is based in Wellington, New Zealand. The practice has focused primarily on individual houses and aims to produce work with a high level of sensitivity and discipline, engaging the spirit of each owner and site. More recently projects have also included apartment buildings, retail fit outs in North America and Europe, hospitality and competition entries across a variety of building types and project scales. To the west, bedrooms sit over the main living areas and to the east, bedrooms and smaller living space sit over the garage.
Clad in dark vertical corrugated iron it anchors the form into the site and is premeditated to develop a relationship with the established trees. The top level the creative cottage contains the living room and a bedroom, the middle the kitchen and the below a dining family area opening out to a deck with views through trees to the east. The house is not a Bach but a home that has the relaxed casualness of seaside living with the solidity, enclosure and practicality of a family home. The main roof is one mono pitch and the rear and side walls are clad in vertical corrugated iron for economy and to visually wrap these parts of the house.
We have run the house through slick across this allowing it to float overhead the ground at the front and rear. The north facing outdoor area is excavated into the hillside so that when planted it will both filter and deflect the wind over the top of the house. The floor levels step with the land to produce varying relationships between spaces. The roof form helps fold’ the house into the shape of the land around a small central courtyard area.
The bedroom glossy has been excavated back into the hillside with the deck and living spaces sitting above. Two main gestures set up the structure of the house external sections of pitched corrugated iron roofs wrap and frame the house, these fit within the building envelope and create a relationship with the existing houses of the area, while a flat roofed lightly shaped wooden clad element running between the pitched roofs houses the garage, bedrooms and pool. Flooring and decking change in material and texture as they run slick from the west courtyard, through the living room and out to the west deck. Decks are located at each final of the living pavilion allowing the sun to be followed throughout the day
