The committee reports to RACS through the Professional Development and Standards Board and submits an annual HREC report to the National Health and Medical Research Council NHMRC to declare its observance of the National Statement on Ethical Conduct in Human Research. Now is the time to build respect and improve patient safety in surgery and deal with discrimination, bullying and sexual harassment. More than anything, cultural change relies on leadership from surgeons who are personally committed to building respect and improving patient safety in surgery. RACS is the leading advocate for surgical standards, professionalism and surgical education in Australia and New Zealand. supporting all Fellows, Trainees and IMGs to complete the e learning module. supporting surgical educators to do the Foundation Skills for Surgical Educators FSSE course. The surgical skills workshops are an opportunity for junior doctors, surgical trainees, registrars and residents to focus on core surgical skills in an interactive setting with direct teaching and supervision from surgeons.
Trainees also have the opportunity to present their scientific work as part of the research component of their training. Accreditation is given by the Australian Medical Council to RACS and standards for education and training are established by RACS. An external member is also sought for the Board of Surgical Education and Training BSET , which the specialty training boards report to and also to the committee which assesses International Medical Graduates IMGs with a surgical qualification for comparability to the Australian and New Zealand standards of surgical competence. We are committed to building respect in surgery in Australia and New Zealand, and dealing with bullying, discrimination, harassment and sexual harassment. Our Action Plan Building Respect, Improving Patient Safety outlines the work we are doing on culture and leadership in surgery improving surgical education and strengthening complaints management. supporting surgical educators to do the Foundation Skills for Surgical Educators FSSE course. launching face to face training to strengthen the skills of surgical educators to identify and deal effectively with DBSH. We have updated many of our policies and procedures to make sure they reflect RACS commitment to building respect, and improving patient safety. Expanded the Foundation Skills for Surgical Educators course, to strengthen surgical education. Goal 2 Respecting the rich history of the surgical profession, advance the culture of surgical practice so there is no place for discrimination, bullying and sexual harassment DBSH . Goal 6 Improve the capability of all surgeons involved in surgical education to provide effective surgical education based on the principles of respect, transparency and professionalism. Goal 7 Train all Fellows, Trainees and International Medical Graduates to build and consolidate professionalism. This Action Plan outlines how the College will promote respect, and counter discrimination, bullying and sexual harassment. In March 2015, the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons RACS established an Expert Advisory Group EAG for advice on strategies to prevent discrimination, bullying and sexual harassment in the practice of surgery in Australian and New Zealand hospitals and in the College. The EAG and RACS recognised discrimination, bullying and sexual harassment by surgeons is an issue for the community, including the medical profession and the health sector more widely. Themes and issues from the stories provided are published in a report of this research. An independent survey of all College Fellows, Trainees and International Medical Graduates was conducted to identify and describe the prevalence of discrimination, bullying and sexual harassment in the practice of surgery. Many College Fellows, Trainees and International Medical Graduates IMGs joined in facilitated online discussions about ideas to prevent and address discrimination, bullying and sexual harassment in the practice of surgery. The EAG sent a survey to more than 300 hospitals and employers to learn about their approaches to preventing and addressing discrimination, bullying and sexual harassment. The EAG was resourced and supported by the College, but was independent of it
