Shell Exploration New Zealand are currently looking at the potential of two basins outside of the Taranaki operations. The marine crew for the survey was from New Zealand and survey expenditure injected some 5 million into the New Zealand economy. They played an important role in helping to ensure that the survey was conducted in accordance with the Department of Conservation’s Code of Conduct to minimise potential disturbance to marine mammals. This is an exciting opportunity for natural gas exploration in New Zealand and a new chapter in Shell New Zealand’s 100 year history.

Shell's first exploration in New Zealand was in the Kotuku Oilfields, on the West Coast of the South Island. In 1955 Shell entered a joint venture agreement to explore oil and gas deposits in the Taranaki basin.
Kapuni started production in 1969, introducing a new era of plentiful and affordable natural gas supply for New Zealanders. In 1973 the Government signed landmark agreements leading to the development of thermal power stations to be fed by M ui’s natural gas to power the country. After NZ 1 billion was spent building the high tech field which is New Zealand’s largest natural gas resource, the Pohokura wells began to flow in onshore and offshore . In 2010 Shell sold its network of petrol stations, commercial, aviation, marine, bitumen and chemical businesses, and a distribution network, to Infratil Limited and the Guardians of New Zealand Superannuation. We are excited about continuing to invest in New Zealand as we meet New Zealanders’ energy needs into the future.

Since its first investment on the West Coast of the country in 1911, the company has helped to lay the foundations for today's thriving industry. We have offices in Wellington and New Plymouth, employing around 400 people. Our team is made up of a diverse range of people from scientists, to engineers to operations staff. Our business provides substantial contracts to Kiwi firms and significant royalties and taxes to the Crown each year. Shell has a 50 share in the Great South Basin permit, off the coast of Otago and Southland. We hold a prospecting permit for scientific research in the remote New Caledonia Basin, 400 kilometres North West of Taranaki, in New Zealand’s Exclusive Economic Zone and Extended Continental Shelf. In Integrated Gas, we focus on liquefying natural gas LNG and converting gas to liquids GTL so that it can be safely stored and shipped to markets around the world. In Downstream, we focus on turning crude oil into a range of refined products, which are moved and marketed around the world for domestic, industrial and transport use. In addition, we produce and sell petrochemicals for industrial use worldwide. Our Projects Technology business is responsible for delivering new development projects and the research and development that leads to innovative and low cost investments for the future.
