What you should know about Wellington Judo And Jujitsu Academy
To increase membership I decided to introduce Karate and Aikido. Luckily we had the collective engineering and building skills between us And we soon turned it into a first class dojo! Meanwhile we all regularly visited and trained with members of the other Wellington regional clubs, which helped to keep up a good standard in the area. Then came a period of many moves! By this time a local architectural firm two of whose members were training at the club agreed to underwrite the expenses. The club then moved again to a dilapidated building straddling Hansen and Tasman Street, next to a Kyokushin Karate club.
There will be no judo practice at the Academy on the weekend of 8 9 April because of the Wellington Open Judo Champs. Patrick has a rich history in martial arts and a unique connection with Japan. He also received his 2nd Dan and branch instructor’s grade in Kyokushin Karate from Mas Oyama and was also fortunate enough to train under the eccentric O Sensei, Morihei Ueshiba in Aikido. Patrick was captain of the New Zealand Judo team in 1966, and training partner for Rick Littlewood during Rick’s build up to the 1972 Olympics.
He was inducted into the New Zealand Martial Arts Hall of Fame in 200 along with Rick Littlewood his close friend of many years. There will be no judo practice at the Academy on the weekend of 8 9 April because of the Wellington Open Judo Champs. There are also office holders and an executive committee that are charged with istering and running the club in accordance with these rules. A strong junior club meet in a dojo running from John’s double garage in Miramar.
John also saw the introduction of Jujitsu which rapidly grew the seniors numbers at the time
