What you should know about Food Standards Australia New Zealand
A Treaty between Australia and New Zealand the Agreement between the Government of Australia and the Government of New Zealand concerning a Joint Food Standards System gives effect to New Zealand’s participation in the system and further specifies the role of FSANZ. FSANZ manages a number of committees and groups through which it engages with consumers, Indigenous representatives, industry representatives and public health professionals. The RMLC allows members to engage in informed discussion about specific issues relating to standards development and standards setting processes and to collaborate on food safety emergencies. Food Standards Australia New Zealand is a bi national Government agency which develops and isters the Australia New Zealand Food Standards Code.
We develop standards for primary production and processing and for food hygiene. FSANZ develops standards in consultation with other government agencies and stakeholders, the Australia and New Zealand Ministerial Forum on Food Regulation sets policy guidelines for the development of food standards by FSANZ. It is part of the Ministry of Health and is responsible for regulating therapeutic products in New Zealand. All agricultural compounds imported, manufactured, sold or used in New Zealand must be authorised under the Agricultural Compounds and Veterinary Medicines Act 1997 and Regulations which is istered by the Ministry for Primary Industries.
It assesses all chemicals new to Australia and assesses those chemicals already used existing chemicals on a priority basis in response to concerns about their safety on health and environmental grounds. The food policy framework for Australia is set by the Australia and New Zealand Ministerial Forum on Food Regulation which consists of health and agriculture ministers from the states and territories, and the Australian and New Zealand governments. The Department of Agriculture and Water Resources is responsible for Australian Government policy and programs that support a globally competitive and sustainable Australian food industry. FSANZ develops the food standards in the Food Standards Code with advice from other government agencies and input from stakeholders.
Australian state and territory and New Zealand government agencies are responsible for implementing, monitoring and enforcing food regulation through their individual food Acts and other food related legislation. Food regulation authorities in Australia and New Zealand work together to ensure food regulations are implemented and enforced consistently. Under the FSANZ Act, the FSANZ Board is appointed by the Australian Minister for Health in consultation with the Australia and New Zealand Ministerial Forum on Food Regulation and must include qualified people from all walks of life. Following her retirement from the Commission, she undertook program reviews and was appointed to a range of non executive board and statutory positions.
Professor Cole currently chairs the International Commission on the Microbiological Specifications for Food and serves on the boards of Institute of Food Technology and Food Standards Australia and New Zealand.
