What you should know about Lyall Bay Surf Life Saving Club

Sports Club in Wellington, Club in Wellington

We have plans to replace the current clubrooms, built in the1950s, with a purpose built clubhouse that meets the needs of a modern club for both lifeguarding and sports. Lyall Bay Surf Life Saving Club has been providing voluntary lifeguard patrols at Lyall Bay for 104 years. Since then it has been extensively modified and extended but now it no longer meets the needs of modern lifeguard operations. To properly serve the community need for life saving on Lyall Bay beach, the club has been working on building a new clubhouse.
New public toilets and changing rooms funded by WCC , and outdoor showers and taps a first for Lyall Bay will make Lyall Bay a more enjoyable beach for swimmers, surfers and families to visit. The Resource Consent is for the demolition of the existing Lyall Bay Surf Club Building and No 2 Clubroom Building and the construction of a new building for the use of Lyall Bay Surf Life Saving Club, including Wellington City Council public toilets on the ground floor level and the re instatement of two sections of the heritage seawall. Every season the Club provides an essential service of voluntary lifeguard patrols at Lyall Bay beach. We need support from the community to ensure we continue this essential service.
Your support is needed to help maintain the club, cover operational expenses water, power etc and purchase the life saving equipment we need. Lyall Bay Surf Life Saving Club was formed on 15th August 1910 and was the first club in NZ to patrol with a reel and line in December 1910. The Lyall Bay Surf Life Saving Club, established in 1910, was the first surf lifesaving club to patrol in New Zealand. The club has been providing a volunteer service focused on saving lives and preventing injury for Lyall Bay and south coast beach users and the Wellington Community over the last 100 years.
Lyall Bay is a very popular beach with families, swimmers, walkers, runners, surfers and windsurfers. As well as providing a community service Lyall Bay SLSC members compete with distinction at Wellington district and national level, and have held World titles in both Senior and Masters competitions. Past members of Lyall Bay Surf Life Saving Club LBSLSC have included Cook Strait and English channel swimming legend Phil Rush, record breaking swimming star Rebecca Perrott, and past Governor General Freyberg it is said that his great swim in the Dardanelles in the First world war could be traced back to his swimming days in the cold waters of Lyall Bay . The history of the Lyall Bay SLSC starts in 1909 when members of the Wellington Swimming Club used to assemble at Lyall Bay beach every week to practice life saving. Members were involved in both patrolling and rescues with three spectacular rescues taking place in large surf at Lyall Bay on Sunday February 20th, 1910.
Morpeth swam out and rescued the exhausted person and brought them back to the beach. The suggestion was made in The Dominion newspaper the following day that members of swimming clubs should form a life saving corps, with the City Council providing rescue equipment. However in August 1910 the first life saving reel to be used in New Zealand was. Morpeth on behalf of the Wellington Swimming Club for service with the Lyall Bay club. By December 1910, with the assistance of a Wellington City Council grant of 6, Lyall Bay had three reels.
No 2 Clubhouse the 2nd building along the beach to the west of No 1 building . The premises contain a large indoor area with great views over Lyall Bay, a basic kitchen with fridge freezer , bar area fridge, tables, chairs and an outside balcony area suitable for barbeques.
